Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to your questions before joining a tour so you know exactly what you want. If you have more questions, feel free to contact us via our contact form.
Is it safe to go on safari in Uganda?
Absolutely! Uganda is one of Africa’s safest safari destinations, and your safety is our top priority. Our experienced guides know how to navigate wildlife encounters safely—animals rarely approach safari vehicles, and gorilla trekking is conducted with strict safety protocols by trained rangers. We provide well-maintained 4WD vehicles, and our guides are trained in first aid and emergency response. Kampala and other cities are generally safe for tourists, and we provide guidance on staying secure throughout your journey. You’re in good hands with our team, who’ve been doing this for years and genuinely care about your wellbeing.
What vaccinations and health precautions do I need?
A valid yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for entry into Uganda—this is non-negotiable at immigration. We strongly recommend malaria prophylaxis since Uganda is in a malaria zone, especially if you’re visiting national parks and rural areas. Other recommended vaccines include Hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and ensuring your routine vaccinations are up to date. We suggest consulting your doctor or a travel health clinic at least 6-8 weeks before departure. We also strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical expenses and evacuation. When you book with us, we’ll send you a detailed health preparation guide tailored to the specific areas you’ll be visiting.
When is the best time to visit Uganda for safari?
Here’s the honest answer: Uganda is a year-round destination, and the “best” time really depends on what you’re hoping to experience. The dry seasons (June-September and December-February) offer easier access to parks and better road conditions, making wildlife spotting more predictable as animals gather around water sources. However, the wet seasons (March-May and October-November) bring lush landscapes, fewer tourists, incredible bird watching, and often lower rates. For gorilla trekking specifically, trails can be muddier during rainy months but the gorillas are there year-round. We’ll work with you to choose dates that align with your priorities—whether that’s photography, specific wildlife, or budget considerations.
What should I pack for my safari?
Think layers and neutral colors! Mornings and evenings can be cool, especially at higher altitudes where gorillas live, so bring a warm fleece or jacket. During the day, lightweight, breathable clothing in khaki, beige, or olive works best—avoid bright colors and camouflage patterns. Essential items include comfortable walking shoes with good grip (crucial for gorilla trekking), a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a reusable water bottle. For photography enthusiasts, bring your camera with extra batteries and memory cards—Uganda’s beauty demands lots of storage space! Binoculars enhance wildlife viewing significantly. Don’t forget a small daypack for carrying essentials during activities. We’ll send you a comprehensive packing list specific to your itinerary once you book, including any specialized gear needed for particular activities.
Do I need a visa to visit Uganda?
Â
Yes, most international visitors need a visa to enter Uganda. The good news is that Uganda offers convenient e-visas that you can apply for online before travel—we recommend doing this at least 2 weeks before departure to avoid last-minute stress. Tourist visas typically cost $50 USD for single entry. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry. If you’re planning to visit Kenya and Rwanda as well, consider the East African Tourist Visa ($100), which covers all three countries and is valid for 90 days. We’re happy to guide you through the visa application process and provide any support documentation you might need. Just reach out to our team, and we’ll walk you through it step by step.
Can I bring my children? Is safari family-friendly?
We love welcoming families! Most of our safari activities are family-friendly, and Uganda offers incredible opportunities for children to connect with nature and different cultures. However, there are important age restrictions to know: gorilla and chimpanzee trekking require participants to be at least 15 years old due to safety considerations and wildlife protection protocols. For younger children, we can design wonderful alternatives—wildlife drives, cultural village visits, boat safaris, and nature walks that create magical memories without the strenuous trekking. Many lodges welcome families and offer family rooms or connecting accommodations. Game drives can be tailored with more frequent stops for active little ones. We’re experienced at creating itineraries that work for your family’s unique dynamics, ensuring both kids and adults have an unforgettable experience.
How much does a Uganda safari cost and what's included?
Safari costs vary widely based on your preferences—accommodation style, activities, group size, and season all play a role. A mid-range safari typically ranges from $300-600 per person per day, while luxury experiences can go higher. Gorilla permits alone cost $800 per person and must be booked well in advance (we recommend at least 12 weeks ahead). Our packages typically include accommodation, meals, park entry fees, activities, ground transportation in well-maintained 4WD vehicles, and experienced guides. What’s usually not included: international flights, visa fees, travel insurance, personal expenses, tips for guides and lodge staff, and alcoholic beverages. We believe in transparent pricing with no hidden surprises—when we quote you, we’ll break down exactly what’s included and what’s not. We also offer flexible payment terms with 30-50% deposit to secure your booking and final payment 15 days before departure.
What types of accommodation can I expect?
Uganda offers accommodation to suit every comfort level and budget! Safari lodges are permanent structures with en-suite bathrooms, hot showers, comfortable beds, and often stunning views—think of them as boutique hotels in the wilderness. Tented camps offer an authentic safari experience with the comfort of proper beds, private bathrooms, and sometimes even hot tubs, all while maintaining that “close to nature” feeling. Budget options include comfortable guesthouses and campsites for adventurous travelers. All our selected accommodations meet our standards for cleanliness, safety, and hospitality. Most lodges have electricity (though some run on generators with specific hours), WiFi is increasingly common but can be spotty in remote areas, and the food is typically excellent with options for various dietary requirements. We’ll match accommodation to your preferences and budget while ensuring you’re comfortable and well-rested for each day’s adventures.
Will I actually see wildlife? What are my chances?
Let’s be honest—wildlife is wild and moves freely, so we can’t guarantee specific sightings. However, Uganda’s national parks are incredibly biodiverse, and we have excellent success rates for most species. Gorilla trekking has over 95% success rate because trackers locate families each morning before treks begin. In Queen Elizabeth National Park, you’ll almost certainly see elephants, buffalo, various antelope species, and countless birds. Tree-climbing lions in Ishasha are seen about 70% of the time. Chimpanzees in Kibale have high encounter rates. The key is managing expectations—some days you might see dozens of species, other days animals remain hidden. That’s the authentic wilderness experience. Our experienced guides know animal behavior, best viewing times, and locations, maximizing your chances. And honestly? Even “slow” wildlife days in Uganda’s stunning landscapes create powerful memories. The journey is about more than just ticking species off a list—it’s about connecting with these territories on a deeper level.
How far in advance should I book?
For gorilla trekking, we strongly recommend booking at least 3-6 months in advance—permits are limited and Uganda’s gorilla experiences are increasingly popular. During peak seasons (June-September, December-February), you might need even more lead time. For general safaris without gorilla trekking, 2-3 months ahead gives you better lodge availability and more flexibility. Last-minute bookings (within 30 days) are possible but require full payment immediately and are subject to availability—you might not get your first-choice accommodations or permits. Our cancellation policy offers refunds depending on when you cancel: 60% refund if you cancel 91+ days before departure, decreasing as the departure date approaches. Important note: gorilla permits are non-refundable under all circumstances, so we strongly encourage travel insurance. We’re here to help you plan at whatever timeline works for you, but earlier booking definitely gives you more options and peace of mind.
Why choose Territory Explorers?
Because your journey matters, and so does who tells the story. Territory Explorers isn’t just another safari company—we’re Ugandans sharing our home with you. For decades, African tourism stories have been written by everyone except Africans themselves, the communities who’ve been guardians of these territories for generations. We’re changing that narrative. When you travel with us, you’re supporting African-owned tourism that empowers local communities, employs Ugandans in meaningful roles beyond just support staff, and ensures tourism dollars actually reach the people who protect these wild spaces. Our founder, Desire Ambrose, grew up surrounded by the beauty travelers journey thousands of miles to see, and he built Territory Explorers on a simple truth: Africans deserve to be protagonists in their own story. We don’t just show you Uganda’s wonders—we invite you into authentic experiences designed by people who call this place home. You’ll connect with communities in respectful, meaningful ways, learn from local conservationists around campfires, and participate in experiences that transform both you and the territories you explore. This is tourism as it should be: respectful, regenerative, revolutionary. When you choose us, you’re not just booking a safari—you’re joining a movement to redefine what African tourism can be
