Rwanda: Primates & Big Five

(Trip Overview)
This eight-day journey is built to reveal Rwanda in its entirety, moving through four distinct environments and three of the continent's most sought-after wildlife encounters within a single, connected route. It begins in Kigali before heading south into Nyungwe Forest, one of Africa's richest rainforest habitats, where guests trek in search of wild chimpanzees and cross the region's celebrated canopy walkway high above the forest floor - an experience that offers a rare, elevated perspective few travelers ever reach. From there, the journey shifts north into the volcanic peaks of Volcanoes National Park for an encounter with endangered mountain gorillas, before moving entirely east into the open plains of Akagera, where the character of the trip changes again. Game drives, night drives and boat safaris here reveal grasslands, woodlands, lakes and wetlands in search of the Big Five - a landscape as different from Nyungwe's dense canopy as it is from the Virunga's cloud-covered slopes. Few itineraries ask this much of a single country, and fewer still deliver it this seamlessly. The result is a trip that treats Rwanda not as one landscape but as several, each given its own dedicated time and attention rather than compressed into a single blur of stops. For travelers who want to leave with a complete understanding of the country; its forests, its mountains, its plains, and its extraordinary wildlife - this eight-day journey offers exactly that, without sacrificing depth for pace.
